Skaftkärr –

development of an energy efficient residential area in Porvoo, Finland

The objective of the project is to develop an energy efficient, safe, personal and cosy area which provides different types of living alternatives.  The area is 400 hectare and will provide housing for at least 6000 inhabitants. The city planning processes will be developed to take energy efficiency better into account.

The planning and innovation process is done in close collaboration with authorities, energy companies, developers of energy use, builders, several companies and the future inhabitants.

A framework is built up for a Living Lab covering the whole residential area with the focus on the development of energy efficiency. The Living Lab will be used for HVAC product development, development of service strategies in the community, development of service concepts for energy utilities and providing the R&D world with energy consumption data. All of the processes will be developed together with the end users.

The energy part of the project focuses on developing business models which support the building of low energy buildings and passive houses. With the business models of today it is difficult to provide low energy areas with district heating.
